Board of Directors
Governance
Public libraries are governed by the Public Libraries Act of Ontario. Under the terms of the act, "a public library board for a municipality whose population is less than 100,000 shall be composed of at least five and no more than nine members appointed by the municipal council."

The main responsibility of the Board is to decide on the policies which determine the operation of the Library. This is done according to the provisions of the Public Libraries Act and under the financial constraints of the municipal budget and the provincial operating grant.

Term of Office
The term of the Library Board is the same four year period as that of City Council.

Membership
Residents of Elliot Lake who are interested in serving on the Library Board are encouraged to submit an application to the City Clerk. Notices of vacancies will appear in the local paper as they become available. It is important to note that membership is a volunteer position.

Qualifications for Board members include the following:

  • is at least 18 years old
  • is a Canadian citizen
  • is resident of the municipality for which the Board is established
  • is not employed by the board or by the municipality

Meetings
The Library Board meets on the second Thursday of the month from September until June. Special meetings may be called, as necessary, by the Chair of the Board.
