Engineering Department
The City Engineer, is responsible for administration of the City's transportation and environmental services, which include the following functions:
  • Maintenance of city infrastructure including roads, sidewalks, parks, storm drainage, water supply system and sanitary drainage system;
  • Transit bus service to all urban residential areas is provided six days a week;
    For residents who are unable to board the regular transit buses, the city provides a Handilift Bus with door to door service;
  • Operation of the municipal airport;
  • Landfill facility operation.

Plants Department
The Plants Superintendent is responsible for the Water Treatment Plant, the Sewage Plant, Water Storage Reservoirs and Pumping Stations.

The City's water supply system includes a modern treatment plant. The quality of the water meets and exceeds provincial drinking water standards. Residential customers pay a flat rate for water. Most businesses and institutions are metered.

The Plant's Superintendent also ensures that all waste water at the sewage plant, is fully treated to provincial standards, including phosphate removal.

Public Works
The Public Works Superintendent directs the day-to-day operation of the department which includes maintenance of roads, sidewalks, walkways, parking lots, garbage collection and disposal, water mains and hydrants, sanitary sewers, storm drainage, parks and the cemetery site. He also manages the City's fleet of vehicles and equipment for all departments.

The Public Works Department maintains 104 km of public roads. This includes a 6 km section of Highway 108 from Esten Drive South to Timber Road. The system also includes 31 km of mine access roads.

There has also been a program of capital improvements in the central commercial area that includes construction of new sidewalks and landscaping features.
